But these days, pet pictures are practically de rigueur -- like school photos for the kids -- which is good news for a generation of local photographers and painters who delight in working with unpredictable, treat-eating models.

In my opinion, the best part of the holidays happens when they're over -- when local boutiques slash prices in January in preparation for the arrival of spring inventory. Most sales end when the discounted merchandise runs out, but it's a good idea to call the store for specific dates.
