After closing its doors for a long nap, High Maintenance Bitch reopens this weekend. If you haven't heard of High Maintenance Bitch (HMB) or read the sassy, pink book by the same name, or watched brother-and-sister founders Lori and Ryan Pacchiano on reality TV (Ryan most recently on Showdog Moms and Dads), you probably aren't the proud, pampering parent of a blinged-out lap dog.

In September 1985 my posse and I, along with several thousand similarly rabid teenaged girls, descended upon Oakland Stadium to witness the miracle that was Wham! We stood through a full opening set by Katrina and the Waves and another by the Pointer Sisters. I bought a T-shirt whose then-scandalous price I still haven't confessed to my mother. And we screamed our fool heads off for George Michael.

Those of us in Washington who love waterfalls are fortunate to live in one of
the premier corners of the planet for these lacy ribbons of crashing
white -- there might be more than 10,000 of them -- and thanks to a big
winter snowpack, this year is one of the best to search them out and
listen to their thunderous roar.

While strolling one of Oregon's expansive sandy beaches, a scurrying
movement in a tide pool caught my eye. Was that a bullhead? No, it was
too egg-shaped to be one of the shy pool-dwelling fish. It didn't
scuttle like a crab -- and the pool was teeming with these mystery
creatures. Whatever it was, the buggy beast was just the reason I'd wanted to
visit Oregon's ocean beaches: for a chance to explore the craggy
coastline, poke around under seaside rocks and sink my toes in sugary
sand.

This Saturday, June 21, Seattle's own Rat City Rollergirls take on The Bay Area Derby Girls at Magnuson Park. B.A.D. Girls are a formidable opponent: their team play is rock-solid, and they roll fast. Hardly surprising. After all, they hail from San Francisco -- a city built upon a foundation of rock and roll.

Pagliacci Pizza has been serving up slices and sodas from its Queen Anne location, on the corner of Queen Anne Ave. and Mercer, for twenty years this week. To celebrate, the pizzeria will serve up even more slices and sodas -- but at 1988 prices.

"Inspiring Impressionism" places the works of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Renoir, Cezanne and the like in a historical and artistic context that gives you a real sense of what the artists had hoped to accomplish. It's wonderful to look at, and thanks to a new cell phone audio tour, it's a joy to listen to as well.

Some weekends are just the pits -- 48 hours to fill with nothing much going on. This isn't one of those weekends. Here's the fun stuff:
