There isn't a canine of any sort on the menu at How to Cook a Wolf, leading us to wonder whether Ethan Stowell has ever indeed cooked one. You could suppose, however, that if anybody could make an appetizing meal out of such a scraggly creature, he would be the man to do it.

I like being reminded to slow down and appreciate the little things. On my first visit to Txori, alone for a late weekday lunch, I was treated to a great many small pleasures. The first was a tall yet teeny table perched over the bustling kitchen, which greets you with fragrant plumes of steam as soon as you walk in the door. From here I could see the careful preparation of the small pleasures that were to follow: Basque pintxos, or small bites, that are the signature dishes of this new Belltown cafe.

For residents of West Seattle, the world is very much their oyster these days. From budget bungalows to seaside condos, they've got their choice of homes; the best beach in the city is their very own; and whether it's a movie, a yoga class or gourmet groceries they're after, there's hardly any reason to leave. All that was missing was the oyster itself. The nearest neighborhood oyster bar was downtown -- definitely not in the neighborhood. With the arrival of the new Ama Ama Oyster Bar & Grill in the former Ovio Bistro space, now all the pleasures of the half shell are within fork's reach.

If I opened a Jell-O bar, would I be able to convince you that Jell-O is like fine wine? What if I served flavors like roasted peach with basil, chilled to perfection in a specialized cooler and served on 1950s-era tableware? And if I sold supplies that would so enhance your home Jell-O-making experience that you would be inspired to plan a Jell-O party (which you undoubtedly would never throw)?

There’s nothing like a tableside appearance by the chef to make a dinner go from great to truly special. It makes you feel like the 50 bucks you’re blowing on a meal is going to someone who truly cares what you thought of his cooking, instead of a faceless kitchen staffer secretly cursing your gluten allergy and personal definition of medium rare.
