As winter approaches and low temperatures drive us inside, you’ll likely welcome the season by gathering friends and family in your warmly lit home. Seattle candle makers and glass artists make it easy for you to create a welcoming environment, and their diverse supply of ambiance-inducing candles and candle holders will set the perfect tone for festive gatherings.

When Leslie Conti of Fremont's Eurostyle Your Life learned that the
Archdiocesan Housing Authority
was closing its 19-year-old wooden toy workshop, The Giving Tree, she knew
something had to be done to save it. After negotiating a great deal on the space and a workshop
full of woodworking machines and supplies, Conti reopened The Giving Tree in October as
Westlake Woodwerks, where local artists volunteer their time making small,
classic wooden toys and other impressive art projects.

Pink Peony
Chocolates' Mary Kay Johncock has a knack for making truffles. Before launching
her Bainbridge Island-based chocolate company in 2005 with best friend and
partner Linda Darley, this former nurse tinkered for months on her recipes
before settling on premium European dark, milk and semisweet chocolates, which
temper well and have a nice, glossy finish.

There are more ways to green up your home than recycling and
switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Interior decorating can be
eco-friendly as well when you swap out your old (but still cool) home
accessories and small pieces of furniture at Sit + Sip at the Phinney
Neighborhood Center from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Women in their 30s on up can "add a little dress-up to
their casual wear" at new Madison
Valley shop Vian Hunter. Inspired by
the timeless and classic silhouettes of the 1950s and '60s, designer Lisa Hunter derives her fashion inspiration from icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.
She scours vintage clothing sales for garments from that era, which she then
reworks into updated, contemporary clothing with a retro flair.

Nicole Miller takes pride in fulfilling Ballard's needs. She opened Blackbird, a men's clothier, on a Ballard Avenue filled with boutiques that served only women. She stocked Scandinavian black licorice in Blackbird's candy-shop annex when Olsen's Scandinavian Foods went out of business. Now, she's making an effort to ensure the neighborhood's future with a notion that's nearly as old as America itself.

There are few places in Seattle that urge women to unleash their
inner girlie-girl more than Shimmer Beauty Bar. Newly opened in October and
owned by Duque Salon + Spa + Boutique owner Giovanna Duque, Shimmer is
resplendent in pink from tip to tail. Nestled next to Ella Mon in a tall, narrow space formerly
occupied by Pulp Lab, Duque envisions Shimmer as "a non-threatening place for
women to exhale, step away and reconnect with their girlfriend community" -- while enhancing their makeup application skills or just sitting back and leaving the work to the experts.
