The second annual Muttmazing Race, hosted by Seattle's own CityDog Magazine, kicks off at the rockin' South Lake Union Block Party this Friday, August 8 from noon to 7 p.m. Inspired by the TV show "The Amazing Race," contestants compete in the Muttmazing Race with their furry, four-legged teammates in a variety of fun challenges for a chance to win great prizes and raise money for the Seattle Animal Shelter's Help the Animals Fund.

If I didn't have a birthday party to attend this Saturday, I'd be heading to Whidbey Island to join the folks with FETCH! (Free Exercise Time for Canines and their Humans!) for a day of wine tasting and music at the Wine Tasting Walkabout Fundraiser.

This Thursday, join fellow dog lovers at Rock 'n' Rover, a night devoted to Reading with Rover and its many pro-literacy pet projects. Bring your dog to this howlin' good time -- there will be games, give aways, a raffle and of course, a concert featuring jazz and blues artist Michael Powers.

It's the peak of kitten season and the Seattle Humane Society is asking for the community's help as its cat population surpasses the 400 mark. The Seattle Humane Society is able to physically house up to 250 cats and kittens. Another 170 cats and kittens are currently in loving volunteer foster homes with food, medical care, and supplies being provided by the Seattle Humane Society. But, with more cats and kittens being admitted to the Bellevue shelter every day, the Seattle Humane Society needs to find more families willing to care for a kitty in need.

With all of the pet festivals we pack into these fleeting days, a little help is always appreciated in finding the pick of the litter. Here's a four-legged-friendly event to top your festival to-do list this weekend.

If your cats could talk, they'd tell you that sometimes an overfilled food bowl just doesn't cut it when you're out of town. Kitties may not need to be taken for walks like dogs do, but they still crave attention, which they miss out on if left home alone. If you want to be sure that your feline is left in good hands while you're away, consider these local cats-only options.

I used to think that my dog Marley was just pretending to have fleas. She would scratch incessantly, but I couldn't find any tiny insects in her fur. I finally realized that dry skin was the culprit. In searching for relief for Marley, I was intrigued to see that Bellevue organic chemist Adelia Ritchie offers natural remedies for dogs with dry skin, hot spots, mange and other skin afflictions.
