While frolicking in the contrails of big-name chefs is fun, my happiest moments as a restaurant writer are those when I stumble on something I could have missed while looking at the world through aviator's goggles -- something rare and wonderful on the ground like Afrikando Afrikando, a jewel of West African cuisine quietly doing its thing right in my own backyard.

What We Crave
Our non-Seattleite friends love to regale us with tall tales of the best barbecue they've ever had -- always, of course, somewhere far from here. Seattle isn't exactly known for its barbecue joints, but we have some tales of our own thanks to Roy's BBQ, a tiny cafe tucked away in Columbia City.

Gentle Snark
Gather, a "nontraditional" storefront gallery located next door to the Columbia City Bakery, is the element that will push Columbia City's First Friday "Beatwalks" into must-see territory. The space itself isn't that overwhelming -- just a spare (but handsome) wood-floored and white-walled gallery, adorned with vases of fresh-cut flowers -- but the art that owner Jenn Jones is putting on its walls is something else. Something great.

Little Kids, Big City
We Northwest parents are suckers for a good cup of joe. Probably because we were up all night, taking care of a bawling baby, teething toddler, or sick kid.
So I love it whenever a new kid-friendly coffee shop opens.

You knew Caribbean food had soul. But did you ever envision soul food from the Caribbean? If Island Soul,
the newest addition to Columbia City's restaurant row, had an ounce of
pretension, they might start throwing around words like "fusion."
Instead, they're calling their miraculous marriage of Jamaican and
American southern cooking a lucky accident, and everyone else is just
calling it awesome.
