Holiday 2008
You're the resident authority among your friends on where to get the best meal in town. So they shouldn't be at all surprised when the best goodies they get this season come from your kitchen. Local businesses are stocked with the supplies and instructions you'll need to unleash your inner gourmand. So round up your friends and family for some hands-on craft projects, then bottle, roast, brew and bake all the love you've got into this year's holiday gifts.

When Danielle Luartes, owner of Greenwood boutique Tweed, and local eco-friendly designer Lizzie Parker met a year ago, each recognized a kindred spirit in the other. They share the same ideas about who their customers are, how clothes should fit and how much they should cost. After three months of collaborating, Luartes and Parker have opened the
Lizzie Parker Eco-Atelier store within Tweed. The shop features a mini
collection called Pieces of Eight, which was born of the idea that
despite tough economic times, women want to look their best and shop
their conscience (organic fabrics, local manufacturing), but are
looking for more bang for their buck.

Given some recent blustery weather, my mind turned immediately to
scarves. There's something about the way French women wear their
scarves -- nonchalantly, but with a unique personal flair -- that I
admire and try to emulate. So I set out to find what scarves local stores are showing this
season, discovering several great options to bring out the chic French
woman in all of us.

Didn't have time to hit the garage sales this summer? There's still an opportunity to check out one of Seattle's largest sales -- without digging through dingy candy dishes or clown posters -- at the Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op's Fall Kids Sale.

OK, you know this feeling. Your hair's ragged, flat, curiously putty-colored and looks like you haven't washed it for days -- because you haven't?
"But, but, I have no babysitter," you say. "And everyone at Le Hackitoff Salon is booked for MONTHS."
No more excuses for unwashed locks, because Beach Comber Kids Cuts has introduced Bridget, a stylist for adults.

Cowboy boots give me a special kind of sass. I slip on a pair and all of a sudden I'm transformed into a classic country queen, a la Patsy Cline. Wear 'em with the right outfit, and I turn feisty-yet-lovelorn like Tammy Wynette. They make me want to kick up my heels, dance the night away and ride off into the sunset. I recently visited two stores in Seattle that sell cowboy boots, Insurrection in Greenwood and Horseshoe in Fremont. While the stores attract a different type of cowboy-boot wearer, they both exhibit a reverence and love of this uniquely American footwear.
