What We Crave

The early bird gets the pot pie at Volunteer Park Café

Today, we feel lucky. We feel special. We feel like we got out of bed on the right side. Because today, we were one of the early birds at Capitol Hill's Volunteer Park Café [0], and we made it there before they ran out of their legendary pot pies. The piping-hot pies (market price) bubble when they come to the table, accompanied by a strong warning not to touch. The creamy, fragrant insides can wait a moment while we gaze upon the golden buttery puff pastry perched on top. We long to plunge in a fork to hear the tender crunch. We finally give up any hope of self-control and dive into the stew, to find herby chunks of chicken, pearl onions and plenty of peas and carrots. Our eyes close as we savor the warmth and count our lucky stars.
