Picoso and other local bands rock the South Lake Union Block Party on Aug. 8

Happening Friday, Aug. 8, the South Lake Union Block Party [0] is full of awesome. The grounds of the South Lake Union Discovery Center, at the corner of Westlake and Denny, are going to overflow with awesomeness. The awesomeness will stick to your clothes, which I promise you isn't half as gross as it sounds.

The entertainment is relentless. CityDog Magazine will present its annual Muttmazing Race [1], pitting human/canine teams against each other in gladiatorial combat. (Though not really.) Several great local bands --Grand Hallway, Aqueduct, Bugs in Amber, Picoso and King of Hawaii -- are scheduled to lay down the necessary block-rocking beats. The day will end with an outdoor screening of "Juno," because why not.

Also, we'll be there. How about that? NWsource will be at the Block Party to announce the winners of our Best Pet Pics Unleashed contest [2]. We're gonna have cute pictures of dogs and cats! Plus, we're pretty darned cute ourselves. Some of us, anyway.

"But what if I get hungry?" you say. Relax, my esurient friend. A number of neighborhood restaurants will be on hand, serving up tastes of their best plates for a $1 charitable donation. Whole Foods Market [2] will hold an "audacious" burger-grilling competition. Seattle Magazine is hosting a wine tasting, and Redhook is hosting a beer garden.

In other words, you'll feast on awesome until you can feast no more. If you eat too much to walk back to your car, you can take the streetcar. Perhaps for the first time ever.

The Block Party is hosted by Microsoft, a new resident of South Lake Union. In a way, that's what this whole thing is about -- getting to know a neighborhood that's growing and changing even as we speak. Awesome.
