Seattle's best coffeehouses
It's no wonder Seattle is an epicenter of coffee culture, what with all the rain, not to mention the cool bookstores and movie theaters. But with coffeehouses literally everywhere, who really serves Seattle's best coffee? We poured gallons of black stuff down our throats to arrive at the answer.
TALK TO US
Bauhaus Books & Coffee
(Capitol Hill)
With its industrial décor, secret recesses all over and charmingly dressed-in-black clientele, Bauhaus is a great place to hang out. The coffee is always good; its Chai tea lattes are best-of-breed. Extra points for staying open until 1 a.m.
Caffe Ladro (upper Queen Anne)
(Queen Anne/Seattle Center)
This store is ground zero for the start of a mini-chain that's made its reputation from opening close to existing coffee places ("Ladro," is Italian for "thief"). Its espresso is pretty darn good and the customers preppy.
Caffe Vita Coffee Roasting Company
(Capitol Hill)
A lot of the java served in other small coffee shops around town comes from Vita; why not drink from the source? These roasters serve up a strong, tasty brew at their clean, Capitol Hill locale.
Diva Espresso
(Greenwood/Phinney Ridge)
The friendly and unpretentious Diva in Greenwood has got one of the finest cups of joe around. It's surprising how good all of its espresso drinks are it's second only to Vivace.
Espresso Vivace Sidewalk Bar
(Capitol Hill)
Seattle's best coffee is right here, hands down. Well worth the wait and the attitude the strict Vivace approach provides the headiest, sweetest espresso you'll find in the Northwest. Its beans, roasted daily, are the best you can buy.
Fuel Coffee (Capitol Hill)
(Capitol Hill)
You'll want to linger with the locals in this small but inviting Capitol Hill establishment. The fuel in question is Caffe Vita, and it goes beautifully with Fuel's road-trip decor and free wi-fi.
Javabean (Greenwood)
(Greenwood/Phinney Ridge)
Javabean's coffee is guaranteed organic, shade-grown and fair-trade and what's more, it tastes awfully darn good, especially when enjoyed with something from the bakery case or the fantastic "Eggel" breakfast sandwich.
Kapow! Coffee
(Eastlake/Lake Union)
Kapow! is a true asset to its neighborhood. Stop by this renovated storage space for tasty Dillanos coffee, Pop-Tarts and friendly conversation.
Panama Hotel Tea & Coffee House
(International District)
Enjoy the Panama's teas, espressos, sandwiches, wireless Internet access and nearly 100 years of history.
Stumptown
(Capitol Hill)
Stumptown's coffee is fanfreakingtastic. Hand-roasted from beans obtained from Free Trade farms -- many of which Stumptown founder Duane Sorenson has visited personally, paying many times the set Free Trade price -- this is coffee as meal, with the same range of flavors you expect from gourmet food.
Victrola Coffee & Art
(Capitol Hill)
Victrola has really strong coffee and great atmosphere. It's gotten so popular, however, that evening and weekday real estate can be hard to come by.
Zeitgeist Coffee & Art
(Pioneer Square)
Your best bet in Pioneer Square is this fun, artsy joint, especially since Torrefazione has gone downhill after being bought out by a chain. Zeitgeist's sandwiches and salads are good for lunch too.
Zoka Coffee Roaster and Tea Co.
(Wallingford)
Zoka serves one of the best cups of coffee in a town known for its superlative cup of coffee. It roasts its own beans on-premises, and the baristas are trained to within an inch of their lives.
