Frozen treats guide
Half the fun of summer is getting outside into the warm, sunny weather; the other half is enjoying summer treats, and nothing says mid-July like ice cream, gelato, Italian ice, sherbert and shakes. Just try not to give yourself an ice-cream headache.
Bottega Italiana
(Downtown)
The gelato they sell is as authentic as you can get without jumping on a plane to Florence. It's hard to know whether to hit the fruit flavors first or the milk-based ones, so get some of each.
Chocolate Box
(Downtown)
The Chocolate Box, on Pine Street between First and Second avenues near Pike Place Market, is a delight for Seattle chocoholics. And as if having an impressive array of local chocolatiers' wares in one spot weren't enough, there's also a coffee bar, bakery and gelato counter.
Cold Stone Creamery
(Fremont)
Beginning with a scoop of softened ice cream (try Cake Batter flavor, we implore you), the Cold Stone staff will fold in anything from macadamia nuts to caramel to cherry pie filling.
Gelatiamo
(Downtown)
Ah, gelato. Italy's answer to ice cream is a cool, delicious treat, and Gelatiamo serves it up as well as any Seattle gelateria.
Husky Deli
(West Seattle)
This family-owned sandwich, ice cream and gourmet grocery shop has been in business for over 70 years.
Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream
(Wallingford)
This whimsical Wallingford ice-cream parlor serves up traditional flavors like chocolate and strawberry, but also fancy ones like salted caramel, balsamic strawberry, honey-lavender, cardamom and Thai iced tea.
Procopio Gelateria
(Downtown)
This Pike Place Market dessert haven is an absolute joy for gelatophiles. Owner Brian Garrity managed to obtain the recipes for approximately 350 (!) flavors from a Milanese gelato master -- yes, there is such a thing as gelato mastery -- and all the gelato is made on the premises.
Scoop Du Jour Ice Creamery & Deli
(Madison Park/Madrona/Leschi)
This Madison Park ice-cream parlor is wonderful. And traditionalists will rejoice, as the menu includes not just the requisite root-beer float but also -- wait for it -- a chocolate malt. Among the many delicious flavors, lemon-vanilla is a standout.
Scoops
(Queen Anne/Seattle Center)
Queen Anne's Scoops is an ice cream parlor that handbakes its waffle cones and offers 36 flavors. Need you hear more?
Vivian's Pride Gourmet Ice Cream
(Redmond)
All the frozen treats at Vivian's, which include not only ice cream but also Italian ice, nonfat yogurt and sorbet, are made on the premises. The shop offers more than 60 flavors in total, though only about two dozen are available at any given time.
