Crave's mac & cheese
GEOFF CARTER / NWSOURCE
You'll crave the mac & cheese at Crave.

Best mac 'n' cheese
Put down that packet of orange "cheese" powder, you poor, deluded fool. Several local restaurants serve a plate of macaroni and cheese that's worth leaving the house for.
Beecher's Handmade Cheese (Downtown)
The gourmet cheeses here taste every bit as good as they look. Buy a wedge or two, or enjoy one of Beecher's take-out dishes (the macaroni and cheese is, not surprisingly, terrific stuff).
Blue Onion Bistro (Ravenna/Roosevelt)
This charming café lives up to its name there are generous amounts of blue cheese and green onions in the Blue Onion's mac & cheese. If you can sort out these two strong flavors, you'll love it.
Cafe Venus (Eastlake/Lake Union)
Café Venus offers a small menu of savory goodies. Its pizzas, sandwiches and salads are all tasty, but the "Mars Mac-n-Cheese" stands head-and-shoulders above all.
icon Grill (Downtown)
The kitchen, under the direction of executive chef Nick Musser, still turns out things like Velveeta-enriched macaroni and cheese, meatloaf and pot pie, a bill of fare described as "aroused Americana."
Kingfish Cafe (Capitol Hill)
Luxurious, decadent and ultra-tasty nouvelle Southern delights await you here, and scores of local mac 'n' cheese aficionados hail the Kingfish version as best they've tried.
Madame K's (Ballard/Crown Hill)
A fun, intimate courtyard in back is surrounded by green trees and other funky knickknacks. We like the thin-crust sausage pesto pizza and the mac 'n' cheese, and the fruit-filled sangria is something else.
West 5 (West Seattle)
Here, you'll find the classic cocktails and the comfort food your grandparents enjoyed before the age of fad diets and bodily self-loathing. The macaroni and cheese is excellent.
