There's still plenty of summer left to flaunt your bronzed body and pretty pedicure. If you're lacking in the tan department and your tootsies need some serious attention, here are some new spots and services available to make your body brown and your toes glow.
Sunset Spa & Tanning (Bellevue)
Veteran aesthetician Suzanne Tran opened this off-the-beaten-track day spa last October. She wanted to create a relaxing spot in Bellevue that's ideal for parties -- and she succeeded. The environment is geared towards individuals and groups that want a soothing setting with reasonable prices.
Have a seat in one of the seven pedicure "thrones," cushy chairs with back massage controls that recline until you're in a supine position. Close your eyes, listen to the calming music and ... sleep. When you awaken, you'll have a perfect pedicure. All nail technicians have identical training, so you always know what kind of services to expect, rather than being subjected to different styles and techniques. "Signature" pedicures are $30 for 45 minutes, and "Spa" pedicures with the works (massage, paraffin dip) are $40 for 60 minutes.
Tanning beds - along with standup tanning -- are available, but I recommend the non-UV spray type. A hand-applied air-brush tan (which is more precise than tanning beds) is just $19 for one application, $35 for two sessions and $80 for five sessions. The spray takes only five minutes with minimal drying time, and tans last between four and 10 days.
Sunset also offers massages, facials, waxing, tinting and Mario Badescu products. The spacious spa accommodates large groups for spa parties and get-togethers.
High Maintenance Skin Care (Capitol Hill)
"The Ultimate Beauty Lounge" on Capitol Hill treats its clients like deserving princesses -- and that's all right with me. They've recently added spray tanning to their menu, and as with the rest of their services, it's top-notch. Using a spray tan system out of Australia (purportedly the same one that the bronzed blondie Paris Hilton bought for her personal use), you'll be a gorgeous natural gold in five to 10 minutes, for the price of $45. The odorless, 100 percent natural product with aloe vera is fast-drying, so you can dress immediately. Kristie Stoffel expertly applies the spray tan, reaching into every nook and cranny (ahem) for even coverage. The tan lasts from four days to a week, and sometimes longer still.
Owner Naomi Lewis plans to take her tanning show on the road and offer mobile tanning services. She'll set up at your event. For one to five people the charge is $45 a tan, plus a $100 travel fee; for six to 10 people the price is $45 per tan, plus a $75 travel fee. For 10-15, it's $45 a tan, plus a $50 travel fee. For 15 people and up, it's $45 a tan, no charge for the travel fee and the hostess receives a free tan.
High Maintenance Skin Care's other new service is "Medicures," a process that involves intensive skin smoothers for hands and feet. The treatment includes a microdermabrasion scrub and glycolic peel for the hands ($50 for 30 minutes). For feet, intensive filing is followed by a microdermabrasion scrub and glycolic peel ($80 for 60 minutes). The result is almost new looking hands and feet. Add polish for $10.
Brides, get your bronze on -- this skin salon is offering the bride and her maids special packages. Opt for a bronzing or body elixir application of your choice for $23 per person with parties of five or less, and $20 per person for parties of 10 or more. (Treatments are regularly $25 each.) Step into a customized "SkinPod" for five seconds and emerge a golden goddess. Turn it into a bridal shower in the cushy lounge with decorations, food and drink. Bring your own refreshments, or place an order for an additional charge. Look for a new location soon at Kirkland Park Place.
The Cote d'Azure bronzing treatment is an alternative to spray tanning and tanning booths. It includes a body exfoliation and the manual application of the Decleor bronzing cream for $70, and it lasts up to four days. Add your face for $15.
Get a rejuvenating "Lulu" pedicure (named after the owner's truly adorable French bulldog) with the reformulated Babour products from Germany ($47 for 60 minutes). If you want to do it yourself, they sell the Hand and Feet Anti-Callus Smoother ($20) and Cooling Leg Gel ($35).
Why shouldn't Mom's toes be as nicely polished as her daughters? This palace of pretty for little girls is becoming popular among moms, too. "So many moms are turning to us for manies and pedies that we're adding another nail technician," says owner Erin Quigley. Look for additional services in September.
Stellar Skin (Bainbridge Island)
This new Bainbridge Island spa is nestled in the back of Ambrosia Beauty. Owner Chris Scoccolo offers spray tanning among her services. The tan lasts from five to 10 days with proper before and after care. (That means exfoliating before and waiting eight hours or more to shower after application. And don't exfoliate after application, either.)
The all-natural spray tan contains no harmful chemicals, oils or alcohols. Prices are $42 for one tan, $114 for a package of three tans and $210 for a package of six tans (the seventh tan is free). Stellar also offers a foot facial, with one-time-use paraffin (no double dipping!) with polish for $56.
Chris Scoccolo has been a busy girl. Along with opening Stellar Skin, she and partner Jill Hellman just opened this new Magnolia studio devoted to skin care and sun safety. They offer the same spray tanning as her Bainbridge Island spot, with the same prices. Other services include Somme Institute facials, skin analysis with a skin scanner, sugaring hair removal and Colorescience makeup.
