This diminutive shop on Phinney Ridge opened early last month. The intriguing name (can a wind be hip?) drove me to the dictionary, where I learned another definition for zephyr: "Any of various things of fine, light quality, as fabric, yarn, etc." The boutique has touches of shabby chic – a vintage display case here, a rustic table there. A prominent, white-washed iron grill encases the counter. The grill is actually made of vintage European radiator covers with coat of arms decorations.
Owner Dana Smith, a former registered nurse, decided to take a break from health care and follow her passion for fashion. Because of her late-in-the-year opening, the shop is a work in progress and hints at things to come. Smith emphasizes the quality in her selection of clothing and accessories. "I'm looking for new labels for Seattle," says Smith, who is targeting women in their 20s to early 50s who want progressive pieces.
You'll find a few select denim labels including 575 ($184) and Rock Revival ($180 per pair). Of the latter, Smith maintains they have just the right amount of stretch. She carries sleek Polici jackets and pants ($100-$200), Anna Paul silk tops ($114 for a paisley print halter) and some remarkable coats and jackets by Walter. The modern-shaped, chocolate-colored wool coat ($390) was tempting. The Parisian-style crinkle-fabric trench in black had a bubble hem and sexy ribbon ties on the sleeves ($320). Trés chic! Leather handbags from Sabina, Pellemelle belts with enamel buckles, Cosabella lingerie and sterling silver jewelry by local designer Ursula Burnham round out the offerings.
Look for more of a good thing this spring. Smith is expanding her inventory and has loads of dresses arriving.
Go to Hip Zephyr now and save on fall and winter merchandise. Smith is having a progressive sale with 20 percent off. Each week prices will drop an additional 5 percent. During the last week of the sale, Feb. 19-26, everything will be half off.
