Plato's Closet

December 29, 2005

jeans

With three full racks of stylish, designer jeans, teens will be salivating over their favorites at Plato's Closet.

Fashion-conscious teens and young adults with upscale tastes and bargain-basement budgets would do well to put Plato's Closet on their regular shopping agenda, not only for the store's trendy bargains, but also as a source of cash. Friendly, courteous sales associates pay cash on the spot for gently used, stylish clothes — a huge incentive to clean out the closet. What's not to like about that?

The store stocks designer brands from Abercrombie and Fitch to Forever to Roca Wear. Creased, whisker-treated, sandblasted and embellished jeans fill three racks devoted entirely to the denim basic. Jeans prices start at $12. Readers of Seventeen magazine voted Plato's the best place to buy jeans. Tank tops with Ecko, Frenchie, Guess, Mudd and Sport labels are sorted by color to make selecting a complete outfit a breeze. A Wet Seal blazer can be had for $12, while a wide array of Bohemian bell skirts sell for $19.99. Plato's also carries tees, footwear and accessories, and one-third of the retail space is dedicated to apparel for the male persuasion. Store owner Jeff Swanson promises that entire outfits can be purchased for $25 or less.

Jazzy, hip background music, a fresh clean scent and a smartly displayed selection of clothing all await bargain hunters at Plato's Closet. One shopper from Eastern Washington, whose treasures filled three bags, said, "We don't have anything like this where I live!"

i HATE PLATOS CLOSET!! there clothes are over priced..they paid me $18.75 dollars for $50 dollar Hollister jeans, and 3 $20 shirts!! I was pissed..there customer service was HORRIBLE!! NEVER EVER GO THERE..IT SUCKS... I have no money and no CLOTHES!! Im poor and broke! I have to wear old, small CLOTHES!! Don't ever Go, just warning you.
Never sell here..it sucks..my sister sold them a $375 skirt from Dior and she got $13.75 she had to sell it because it was all she had..DON"T EVER GO THERE..i sold $175 in Hollister merchandise and got a whopping $30 dollars..NEVER SELL HERE!!
Not worth it to sell your stuff here. The place should only be for ages 16 and under. I had brought them 2 bags of nice clothes from gap, oldnavy, pacsun. they only picked out 2 shirts and gave me $3.60. this place sux. let the kids go and buy there, forget about selling ur stuff not worth it. EBAY IT!!
All the plato's haters need to get over yourself and move on. no one is making you sell your clothes or shop there... if you don't like it move along! Everything i own comes from that store because i can dress better than anyone else i know and spend about a third of the price! go ahead and spend 50-75 dollars on abercrombie jeans at the mall. that means more 12-18 dollar abercrombie jeans for me!

Plato's Closet sucks! At least mine does! All the people that work there are so rude and snooty! I actually heard one of the employees say to another, "Our boss likes me better because I don't take all of the clothes like you do. She says you take everything and I'm good 'cause I only buy good clothes from customers." I should have learned my lesson 'cause one day when we walked into Plato's a girl came up to us right away and said with a really snooty voice, "JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, we're CLOSING in 15 minutes." Then she rolled her eyes at us,and turned heel. What a great way to get customers! I would rather take my clothes to Goodwill and help people than take them to Plato's and have them take forever to decide what they're going to take so you'll shop and then give you a few dollars for your name brand stuff. Oh, and they advertise that they give you cash! Yeah, more like a check. I've NEVER gotten cash.
Platos closet is terrible. I have a never worn Quicksilver hoody, and never worn pair of AND 1's that the lady denied. What the hell? The lady made an excuse that there was a tiny hole on the body, which was just part of the lining, no hole. I ended up getting a whopping $4.20 for this 2 hoodies that cost over $30 bucks together. The people there are ALWAYS rude, and have an attitude, I hate Platos closet.
yeah.. you guys are right. it is a way bad place to sell clothes. they only give you like 1/3 of the money that they would sell it for. but then at least youre getting it if you never wear it anymore. but they still should pay more for it. and also like thier jeans are good prices & shirts are okayy. i could just go to the store and get a brand new shirt on clearence never even worn by anyone else half the price THEY sell.

well i read the reviews i had a bunch of sean john clothing from jackets to jeans aint no way im gonna sell them there what so i can get 4 dlls for a 120 dll jacket and 2 dlls for some 8o dll jeans

I HATE Platos Closet. They will rip you off. Know matter what you take, they never want it or don't give you nearly what its worth. I took a bag full of name brabd items in there and they only bought a pair of shoes that cost me 45 dollars that i never wore and gave me 2.80 for them. ThEY SUCK!!!

Plato's closet employs the rudest people on the planet. I was there when the manager was there and they still acted snotty towards customers. I attempted to sell a brand new pair of True Religions and was offered ten bucks. No thank you. Now if you dont mind the snotty attitudes and DONT sell your stuff, you can actually get super cute clothes at bargain prices with that slightly worn comfy feel. However, the experience is a total drag. You walk out of the place thinking "Do I have something in my teeth? Toilet paper on my shoe? Foul BO? LOL, but you get the point.

Lol that math question is hilarious. anyways. well yeah it does suck. but atleast its still a little bit of cash for my birthday i got 955 dollars and i needed a few extra to go on a shopping spree and i have a bunch of old brand clothes and took in like 50 shirts 3 jakets and a bunch of accesories and ended up getting 100 something bucks. my shopping spree was awesome :)

I have worked at a Plato's Closet for over four years. People need to understand that we are a re-sale store. You are not going to get what you paid for back for your clothes. We need to make a profit too. We sell the items in the store 50-70% off what you bought them for originally and you receive 35-40% of that. If you don't like it; don't sell to us!

I recently went to Platos Closet and I bought 11 nice, name brand shirts for 40$ i was really amazed by how cheap some stuff was, expecially since the store I went to in Illinois was havin a store wide 1/2 off sale!!!!!! So even with the already cheap prices, i bought stuff for even cheaper then before. I agree not to bring your clothes in there if your expecting alot of muulaaaaa BUT its a good place to shop when your low on cash and want some cute stylish stuff....

I bought a new looking, hollister tee shirt for 3.50!!!!!!YAYY!! and a A&F dress for 6.00, PLUS it was new with tags!!!!!!!!! I dontknow if it was just the Platos I went to, but they had SUPER CUTTTEE clothes for 50-80% of what you would pay for them in stores AND the employees were super nice an d suggested some outfits for my tall and skinny figure........Oh yeah and i got a BRAND NEW Abercrombie tank top, with tags for 2.00 ~~ Platos is my new faveeee sttoorreee

Plato's closet by me is completely useless. I mean, they are sooo freaking picky about Abercrombie tags and all that. Who cares if the tag is from last year. What should matter, is that it isnt in bad condition. But then they will go and buy the uglyist clothing from someone else with Target tags and it is all faded and stained. Doesn't make any sense to me!! Then when they do buy stuff. They give you a dollar back for a Bebe shirt! C'mon!!! I thought they moto was supposed to be, Buy cool clothes for cash?? And replace it with stuff in the store. You really can't replace anything when they give you back 10 bucks for 30 items!! Dumbbbb

My 17 year old son & 19 year old daughter want to clean out their closets. Most of the clothes comes from PAC SUN or American Eagle. I'm looking for a place to consign them out. I'm in Fall River, MA. I'm not that great on the computer and I don't have the time for E Bay. (I'm using a computer at work on my lunch time) Can you help me?
thanks

I used to work for Plato's and I've never been so disgusted!

We were told by our managers to only buy certain styles that fit the AF, AE, Hollister looks when we're in a very culturally diverse city! I heard several customers complain that the items we had were just too generic.

I had to quit because the other employees were so rude and judgmental and would talk about customers while they were in the store! UGH!

AWFUL!

The people on here complaining about them not paying enough for clothes need to rethink their criticisms. It's basic math, people. They're a business. They need to make money. They're not going to pay you $45 for your pair of $60 jeans, because when they turn around and sell them for $15, they loose $30. They're not even going to pay you the $15 that they're going to sell them for, because then they won't make money. It's not rocket science.

I have two Plato's Closet stores by me. I hit them both. Staff has always been cool to me. I've sold and bought some sweeeet stuff!!! Just got a lacoste polo for $16. I know they cost $68 in the store. They have a great selection with cheap prices so it's cool they are picky. How much can you pay someone for a shirt that is $6 bucks? Hey they are teen & college resale and keep the prices in line with what we can afford. I'm broke and appreciate that. Where else can you go & get paid cash right there and then-any season any time? My mom does consignment and get more $$$ but she has to wait till her stuff sells-sometimes 6 months. She says the store doesn't take any risk so they can pay more cuz if it doesn't sell they give it back to her.

Where are you guys? I'm in a suburb next to Chicago. Visit the stores over here.

UHH zo i vent to platoos cloost yestrdai n they r zupr annoying, they loked dat meh lik i waz dum cus i brogt in an shirt from dots w/ a tag on it evn! they rudly said diz iz not a place fer zome1 of my kind. whatzz dat suppozed to mean yo?

Okay seriously people who say stuff like I sold my designer clothes and got cheap money! WHat did you expect? How would they earn money if they payed hundreds of dollars for your clothes you idiots. Its like a garage sale nobodys going to buy it if its over price. They cant buy a $300 skirt from you and then just sell it for $15. How do they earn money?

COME ON.

Okay so I went to platos closet and I liked it the one near me has awesome clothes great styles and everything...with the economy how it is right now we were so short on money so I told my mom to go to platos closet yeah they dont buy stuff for a big price but it business the staff was great. Unlike the mall there wasn't a big rush and plus when you do go to the mall everyone goes back to school with the same stuff who wants that?? so I go to platos closet went back to school when everyone else was wearing the same exact outfits i was wearing stuff totally different yay!!

well, i work at platos closet and i have read all of the reviews here some good some bad the main thing i keep hearing is that we are all snooty and rude well in case anyone has ever been into any type of retail store your sometimes going to get rude people its not just in plato's there are rude people everyone i have my day but most of the time im very nice, helpful towards all customers. we are not all rude the store that i work the workers are ver helpful and nice but when you are rude to us that doesnt very much as well help the situations at all now does it the golden rule says; do on to others as you have them do on to you. we are a business we need to make a profit and none of the pricing is done bye hand it is all set in computers we work with. not by any means at all are you obligated to sell your stuff to use you can take it back if you not happy with the offer. we love our customers you are what drives our busines and thank you very to all the people who do support us

hi people im going to platos closot on wednesday. im in richmond, va AND ONE OF MY FRIENDS SAID THEY HAD COOL SRUFF FOR GREAT PRICES AND SHE ALSO SAID THEY GAVE YOU CASH FOR CLOTHES. I HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS OUT ALL RIGHT BY PEOPLE.

omg! i went to platos the other day, and it was AWESOME! they have soo much stuff! i was amazed at the endless racks of clothes, shoes, and sooo much more! from what ive heard platos isnt the best place to sell your clothes to, but they have to make a profit so they cant give you much money. and i also heard they were picky, but if they werent, i probably wouldnt enjoy shopping there as much. but i <3 platos!!! awesome store! imma keep comin back!

I agree that they are unfair when it comes to selling your clothing to them; however you get great prices on great merchandise. Everything has a down side, but I still enjoy shopping their! =]

sounds like they have lots of kutte clothes thats cheap :]]
is there a Plato's Closet in LA..?can anyone tell me where this place is???

It's really hillarious you guys are getting bashed on by a snotty Plato's Closet clerk! I own my own resale store and it is Consignment. We pay you UP FRONT Cash for all your name brand EXCELLENT CONDITION on the spot and we will consign the stuff that isn't ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IN EVERYWAY. We pay 60% of what we sell it for. You are getting Plato's to buy your awesome Hollister Jeans for like $5...believe me I know. I took American Eagle Jeans (with tags still on them and still in the American Eagle bag that I bought that day) and they gave me $7 a pair. If you brought that stuff in my store we would sell them for at LEAST $15...and you make 60%. We dont mark your stuff on sale and you get what you deserve!!!!! Hollister Jeans sell for around $25-$30 if they are in excellent shape. Plato's only prices them low so they don't have to give you very much for them. Their "system" is bogus. And when they say they will donate your stuff to charity that's crap don't believe it. I took several things in there before I opened my own store....(Silver Jeans that were perfect in every way they wouldn't take any of them) so i decided to "donate" them to a good cause.....yea right 2 days later i went in there and looked through the jeans and found ALL OF MY SILVERS ON THE RACK FOR $28 a piece. PLATO's IS A RIP

People need to understand that they want something they can RESELL. Would you want to buy something that is stained or in horrible condition? NO. So quite all of the complaining. If you dont like the offer they make, you do not have to take it!! No one is forcing you to get rid of your things. So if you are that pissed about the offer just take your things and leave.

Heyy, you should be happy with the money you get since you aren't even gonna wear the clothes anymore.I would rather have $15 in my pocket then have a pair of jeans laying in my closet that I don't even want. It's better than nothing. But you have to admit, there deals are great.I mean,$60 abercrombie jeans for $12?? That is unbeatable :).

i dont like the idea of platos closet. its making already insanely over worn clothes even more popular. its a haven for kids to go and buy clothes not for their age group at low prices. abercrombie and fitch is for young adults and hollister is made for the older teens. there are too many jr high kids walking around thinking theyre cool in HCO and A&F. its horrible, annoying and to be honest sickening. kids these days are unbelievably materialistic. they arent happy unless they have a bird on their shirt and a gucci purse in their hands.

Okay, seriously, for all the people who are complaining about selling expensive clothing and not receiving any money, CAN IT. It's used , what do you expect, if they bought your stuff for a lot of money, the store wouldn't be so cheap. You can sell if for a few dollars, or your can donate it or do nothing, don't you think it's better to make 10 dollars rather than nothing. I don't know if anyone here has ever had a garage sale, but things are up to 1/20 times cheaper. IT'S USED, TO GET OVER YOURSELF... okay?

i can't wait to go it seems so cool. My friend told me about it and my mom whonts to take me there and do a lot of shoping.

every one that says that plato colset stinks well they suck

well i got an ed hardy hat for $7 :) got a pair of lucky brand lil maggies for $35. but i had a hard time finding anything else very good. all the shirts and most of the jeans are crappy... bad quality, old styles, pilling. i wish they were MORE picky.

AND... the staff was very nice but the manager was psycho. she kept yelling at the employees over and over.. she was old and had obviously gotten all her clothes from there...

if youre old, realize it, and please dont wear a miniskirt with ridiculous espadrilles. you just look dumb and whorish.

wow... off topic...

Would you big cry-babies get over not getting full-price for your USED-CLOTHES!!!
What do you expect?Once your clothes leave
the store and go into your closet, you'll
never even get half-price for them.
Oh and by the way, who' twisting your arm,
making you sell your clothes??!!
If you have a problem with it,
THEN BUILD A BRIDGE AND GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!

I LOVE Plato's closet! My friend introduced me to it THANK GOD!! :D

platos closet rocks and you all know that

haha wow some people are getting pretty defensive over a used clothing store haha. if people wanna bitch about platos closet then it sounds good to me. no one is forcing them to sell their clothes their, but no one is forcing you to sit here and cry because a ton of people don't like plato's closet. damn calm down. im pretty sure we can all do math

DOES THIS STORE SELL KIDS GUCCI SHOES

I took a Hollister coat, a box of Express and AE sweaters, another box of Banana Republic, Express and A&F shirts, brand new Silver jeans, Lucky, Express and A&F jeans, and they would not buy any of it. All the jeans were in like-new condition (a few pairs never worn). As I looked around the store, I saw cheaply-made clothes (non-name brand t-shirts for $12?!?) that looked worn and stained. What's the deal with that? I ended up selling my stuff on Craig's List instead.

I went to Plato's closet and honestly the staff was disgusting. I saw that they had sorted through my clothes and that I was ready to check out. I didn't realize I was in the "wrong line" so I waited 15-20 mins while they sorted out the womans clothes in front of me. Then I decided to stand next to a different cash register and the employee told me next time I should go to that cash register first so they can ring me up. Then she didnt even ring me up and went back to sorting through clothes; there were 3 employees all ignoring me sorting through clothes and then finally 5 mins later one helped me. Idiots I tell you; I will never sell or shop there!

Ok, I am thinking of selling all of my old AE and stupid name brand clothes like that at Plato's closet.... Do they have any hot topic or pac sun stuff there? Or am I better off just going to the mall

Well, here's my problem with Plato's Closet. I thought that the point of the store is that they carry GENTLY used, NAME BRAND stuff. Right? Well, the one in my town doens't always adhere to that. They carry jeans that are ripped and frayed at the bottom, I've seen faded clothing, clothing with holes in it...and yes, they do have a lot of name-brand stuff but then I also see clothes from Walmart and Target! I mean come on!
