When metal fabricator and designer Frank Mansfield first set out to
build a better pet feeder, he made do with whatever was handy -- milk
crates, recycling bins, cardboard boxes. His aim was to place the food
bowl at the most efficient feeding height for his pack of rescued pit
bulls and lone Pomeranian. His experiments soon grew into an
Everett-based business, These Creatures, that offers ergonomically correct feeders for furry friends of all sizes.

November is adopt-a-senior-pet month, so there's no time like the present to welcome an older dog or cat into your home. I'm a big fan of the show LA Ink and now your dog can show off its own ink by Los Angeles based artist Anna Graham. Inspired by her Boston terrier Jim, Anna creates custom collars, leads and bowls for your four- legged friend, featuring her tattoo-inspired designs. Each is hand painted and can be personalized with your pooch's name. Choose from a variety of classic designs including Asian koi fish, a pin up girl, Day of the Dead, and more. About a week ago, a package arrived at the CityDog Magazine office and lo' and behold, it contained an "Obama for President" dog collar. I dug around to see if there was also a "McCain for President" collar inside, but to no avail. Guess that makes me part of the "liberal media."

Scientist-turned-software-project-manager-turned-artist Anandi Raman Creath calls herself a geek at heart -- but we think these not-so-geeky custom dog tags are pretty cool. And, they're made right here in the Northwest (Redmond, to be exact).

I'm not a baker myself -- in fact, I rarely even cook. But still, there's something about creating something from scratch that feels homey, especially during the holidays. That's why, in its upcoming holiday issue, CityDog Magazine (for which I am also the editor) will feature recipes from Seattle-area dog lovers.

Soon, Seattle will be crawling with little monsters dressed in ghoulish garb as ghosts, goblins, witches and warlocks hit the streets for tricks and treats. And, Halloween isn't reserved just for humans anymore -- with costumes galore for canines, our furry, four-legged friends can now join in on the fun.
