Your dog or cat is as much a fixture in your home as your sofa -- and so is the hair-covered dog bed or the always-in-need-of-cleaning litter box. For those concerned with appearances, Bellevue pet-furniture company DenHaus offers a stylish alternative for the more unsightly aspects of pet ownership.
The pet "dens" are designed to blend into home décor while providing a cozy, out-of-the-way space for pets or litter boxes. Currently, DenHaus units are available in two styles. The TownHaus is a traditional, solid-wood end table available in four sizes and three finishes ($399-$499). The ZenHaus is a sleek oval den handcrafted from fiberglass, available in two sizes and four colors ($525-$565). Both types of units require some easy assembly.
DenHaus units are considerably more expensive than traditional pet beds, and the sight of a pug or poodle seemingly "trapped" inside an end table can be a little disconcerting on first glance. But the company was started in 2005 by a Bellevue couple -- Sarah and Chris Pierce -- who had in mind not only style but also the best interests of their adopted hound, Amber. The Pierces wanted to crate-train their new dog in a way that was safe and comfortable, but that would also fit in with their newly remodeled and decorated house.
Look for the less expensive, aluminum BowHaus model to come out later this year. In the meantime, to order a TownHaus or ZenHaus, or the beds that fit inside, visit the DenHaus Web site. Locally, Urban Beast in South Lake Union carries the ZenHaus model and can also assist with assembly.
