The latest addition to Fremont's collection of pet stores is geared toward the practical needs of active companions. Petapoluza leaves the leopard-print carriers and rhinestone collars to boutique neighbors such as Railey's Leash & Treat and focuses on a broad selection of healthy food and treats, as well as accessories for dogs on the go and a holistic vet who's in-house on Fridays.

A spic-and-span feed-store ambiance prevails here, with shiny galvanized buckets of treats, a cheerful specials board and racks of toys and pet necessities. The back wall is neatly lined with 13 varieties of dog food and 11 varieties of cat food -- all of them natural, filler-free (no corn or wheat) and bursting with quality meat proteins. Petapoluza's top brand, Orijen, uses foods sourced near the Canadian company and ranges from $12.99 for a five-pound bag to $53.99 for 30 pounds.

Intrepid canines can get outfitted with all the gear they need for weekends on the lake or in the mountains. A Ruffwear ballistic nylon life vest ($69.99 for large, $49.99 for small) keeps water dogs afloat, while the K-9 First Aid Kit ($49.99) has a full complement of remedies for dogs in distress. A duffel from Ballard-based Dingolope ($59.99) lets pups pull their weight on hikes.

Petapoluza also has two self-serve grooming stations with tubs, tables, dryers, ear wipes and toenail clippers, where owners can spruce up their dogs for $15. Cats are free -- because everyone knows how much they love baths.

Petapoluza is at 114 N. 36th St.; 206-632-4567. Visit the store online at www.petapoluza.com.
