My dogs
have artistic temperaments -- that's how I explain their free spirits. A muse
or a drummer only they can see and hear inspires responses not strictly in the
program. So a First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square featuring an
exhibit of dog-centered
art and photography in a dog-friendly space sounds like the perfect
opportunity to demonstrate their aesthetic sensitivity and to put to bed the
rumor that they are simply poorly trained.

Nancy, Schmancy, Fancy+Pants -- there's a lot happening on this short block on Second Avenue. The newest shop is Nancy, a tiny gallery and gift shop owned by artists Kate Greiner and Aaron Murray, who are husband and wife.

Forget fussy sweaters, feather boas and rhinestone collars. Here in fleece country, we like low-maintenance stuff for our pets and, OK, ourselves. We want practical, funny, and most important, we want smart. So here are a few of our — and our companions' — favorite things.

It takes only seconds to see that Alchemy Collections, as its name suggests (alchemy, in this case, being the medieval practice of turning base metals into gold), is a place where common elements are transformed into something unique and beautiful.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Just call it "The Pearl."
Known officially as the Pearl District in downtown Portland, the former warehouse and industrial area on the north side near the Willamette River is respectfully referred to by most locals in that quicker, livelier vernacular these days. It's trendier too -- "The Pearl" rolls off the tongue easier than "Pearl District."
