If your mom is anything like mine, she loves pretty-smelling things, like scented candles and aromatherapy diffusers, but never splurges on herself to buy them. While I wish she would pamper herself a little (heaven knows she deserves it), I'm happy to do it for her, so I'm always on the lookout for sweet-smelling luxury items. This year, just in time for Mother's Day, I've found two local purveyors of good scents to choose from.

There's a sweet smell coming from deep in the heart of Seattle's South Park neighborhood. That's the home of Big Dipper Wax Works, where owner Brent Roose, manager Flower Grosskupf and a staff of worker bees melt, dip and scent pure beeswax candles, which end up on the shelves of Whole Foods, Dean & DeLuca and other stores nationwide.

It may come as no surprise that a shopping columnist would give little heed to an old adage like "It's what's on the inside that counts," but when I first saw Mor, an Australian line of body-care products and home fragrances, I was so struck by the gorgeous packaging that I purchased several items without even stopping to sniff the candles or test the lotions.

The key to giving good host/hostess gifts, according to hospitality experts, is purchasing something slightly novel – a luxury your gift recipient wouldn't likely buy for themselves. When it comes to deliciously scented soaps, candles and lotions, Fremont's Essenza has you covered. Check out its ample supply of L'artisan candles, 1.2 ounces for $16 each, in flavors as varied as wild blackberry and fig tree. A dainty package of black and white Maria Evora soap is another great option, particularly the $12 set of eight soaps in alternating scents of carob/sea salt and beach rose. Cote Bastide body cream is also a delicious gift idea, available for $20 in amber, fig and rose.

The gift haven has everything from edible lavender goodies to sleep aids, bath and body products and candles. One of her top sellers is the squishable lavender stress ball ($6). "Everyone from nurses to teachers to executives loves these," says Jordan. Smush these fragrant fabric-covered balls filled with lavender to relieve tension. Also popular are eye pillows filled with lavender ($20), lavender-filled neck and shoulder bags that can be heated up in the microwave ($30), and pretty organza scarves with beaded fringe filled with just a bit of lavender hiding in the folds of the fabric ($33.95).
