Little Kids, Big City
Seattle culture counts coffeehouse savvy among the top requirements for locals, so I have been on a quest to find spots that offer both quality joe and a pleasant kid spot ever since Gub was born. Ballard's Firehouse Coffee is always a hit with its separate room full of toys and tables, but sometimes it is crowded or, worse, dirty. Our new favorite spot to meet friends on that side of town is Caffe Fiore, on Leary right off the main drag in Ballard.

Pet Dish
Lulu would wade through a pool of fire-breathing cats for a piece of old, dry kibble, so I had to say "sure" when my new friend offered a treat. She liked my dog, had a cookie supply in her car, was prepared to trek out and back in the middle of a busy day. I adore dog people. But I did think: If a stranger offered a cookie from their car for my kid, would I say yes?

So it was about 9 a.m. when I arrived by bus at Third Avenue and Bell Street in downtown Seattle. Awfully early to be doing this, but at least I had decent weather — chill blue skies, air filled with tornadic swirls of red and yellow leaves. Outside the window I saw a much-trampled dog-run park, mutts everywhere with people trotting behind, one hand gloved in plastic awaiting the blessed event so they could get to work.

Bird on a Wire is a positive throwback to the days when coffeehouses were extensions of somebody's living room -- the easygoing baristas, the comfortable (and mismatched) vintage chairs, the walls appointed with local art and the shelves covered with funky ephemera.

Convergence Zone
The tables lining the wall are all different lengths, giving the long, narrow space a curving flow. Plunging, twisting iron rods shape the custom-made chandelier and exterior gates. It is nonlinear. It is fluidly organic. It is “the Fiore Thing.”
