My New Year's resolutions inevitably revolve around something to do with my body, starting with the universal top three: lose weight, exercise more, eat better. But these require more effort on my part and delaying immediate gratification. That's why I add new beauty products and spa treatments to my list. You, too, can be resolute -- make an appointment for a facial today or buy yourself a new moisturizer. Here's what's new on the spa scene to start the year off right.

Disappointed by the news that her favorite Queen Anne spa was closing, Suzanne Buchanan did what any spa-loving general contractor would do -- she opened her own spa, named it after her favorite aesthetician Elin Blix, and hired her.

Appointments are filling up for discounted massages and facials during Spa Week, Sept 18-24. This is the first year Seattle has participated in the national event, which invites spas to offer high-end services for a flat fee of $50. An East Coast public relations firm started the promotion in 2004 to attract new customers for its clients in New York, and it's grown to include 10 major cities.

The stylish spa is situated among the rapidly developing condos on Capitol Hill, toward the east end of the Pike-Pine corridor. Though it's on the small side, the spa’s clever design and architectural details create a feeling of spaciousness. An outdoor private patio is perfect for parties or drying painted toenails on nice days. The decor features energetic shades of aqua, white, red, and dark brown wood. Circular patterns show up in fabrics, chairs and bubble lights. There are two treatment rooms, five side-by-side manicure stations and four adjacent pedicure chairs, providing opportunities for chatting and meeting others. It reflects the shift from punky, partying neighborhood to sophisticated in-city living around this part of the Hill.

Having a hard time keeping up with the booming beauty industry, new treatments and spas? Well, you just sit back, relax and read. I've done all the footwork for you (for which I'll be justly rewarded with a foot massage), have spent time worrying that I've covered everything (now I need Botox), and have stayed up late writing this piece (so I'll de-stress with a relaxing facial and massage). Enjoy!

WHISTLER, B.C. Most people go to Whistler to ski and snowboard or hike and bike in spring and summer. I went for a salt rub, mud wrap and hot-rocks massage.
One of the top ski resorts in North America, Whistler also has become spa heaven. You can indulge in almost anything, from the conventional (massage and manicures) to the unusual ("energy balancing" and ancient Indian Ayurvedic treatments).

The view from the top of the treehouse at Wellspring spans snow-capped mountains and tall fir trees, but at this moment I was training my eyes on the mane of graying hair falling around Sunny Thompson-Ward's fleece vest as she climbed the ladder ahead of me.
We were nearly 20 feet above the ground, and I was afraid to look either up or down.
"We encourage two hands," she joked, as we grabbed handrails fashioned from tree limbs and climbed onto the porch. "This was our children's playhouse."
