Little Kids, Big City
As fuel prices reach record levels, that cross-town playdate or activity looks less attractive. But several attractions (including the Burke Museum, Pacific Science Center and Seattle Art Museum) and businesses are handing out coupons to those of us willing to give our cars the summer off, through the Seattle Climate Action Now (CAN) program.

Little Kids, Big City
Although we've lived in West Seattle for several years, it wasn't until last summer that I got into the Water Taxi Habit. We live just far enough from the Seacrest dock that it never seemed to be anything more than a bus alternative, but once I actually rode the thing, I realized that speed is not the point of getting on the little boat.

End of the Line
Like an increasing number of locals, I rely primarily on Metro to get around, and that's what I'll be doing in this column. Every other week, I'll ride a different Metro bus route from the downtown core to its neighborhood terminus, at which point I'll hop out and do a bit of exploring. Ideally, I won't know exactly where the bus will take me; it'll be just like that Anthony Lane piece in The New Yorker, in which he boarded a plane without knowing where it would land.

Convergence Zone
What's in a name? Though the story remains strictly apocryphal, the staff at South Lake Union's Kapow! coffee shop would have you believe that the City of Seattle originally named the neighborhood's shiny new fleet of streetcars something dirty -- something very dirty.

I've put together some helpful information to help you and your kids safely and successfully explore Seattle via Metro.

PORTLAND -- When you aren't knocking around the riverfront, getting to Portland can be half the fun -- if you leave your car at home.
Amtrak is a popular no-driving way to get there from Puget Sound. But to add zip to your trip, fly. A year-old light-rail line to Portland International Airport makes getting into the city a cinch.
Do what I did: Pack a carry-on bag and hop a shuttle flight from Sea-Tac. If you're flexible and willing to watch fares, you can often nab a round-trip for under $100.

PORTLAND -- The Rose City is going back in time to provide a new public-transportation system that makes touring the town even more of a treat -- in a city that was already a carless visitor's dream.
"Look, we have streetcars again," says Kay Dannen, community-relations manager for Portland Streetcar Inc.
