When my sweetie and I arrived at new West Seattle restaurant Spring
Hill, we were seated at a table set with gleaming forks on
lemongrass-green placemats, and we felt a little like we were playing
house in an IKEA showroom.

I look forward to sampling more of the People's Picks winners, in the favorite place to dine with kids category. I certainly saw several of my favorites on there. And I wondered -- which specific qualities make a restaurant family-friendly for you?

Everything's coming up roses for Ethan Stowell. Within the past year and a half, the 34-year-old owner and executive chef of Union
not only got married, he also launched two much-lauded restaurants,
made the James Beard Foundation's short list of finalists for "Best
Chef Northwest" and has been tapped as one of the country's best new
chefs by Food & Wine Magazine. Can "Iron Chef" be far behind?

Next time you are downtown with the kids and everyone is getting antsy from low blood sugar, stop at the Crumpet Shop to calm down with a cup of tea and a snack. You can sit at the counter by the window and watch the tourists swarm or snag one of the little tables to have a civilized conversation. If you are in on the early side, you might be able to watch the crumpet makers at work with the big griddle.

Want to wow your sweetie this Valentine's Day? The odds are that the usual cards and teddy bears won't get you very far. Instead, think unique, personalized, and exceedingly romantic. Both men and women expect romance on Valentine's Day —and a gift that will remind them that they're loved beyond February 14. We enlisted Cupid's help and scoured the city for gifts that said "be mine."
