Rosario Resort on Orcas Island may not be the posh retreat it was in its heyday, but the historic inn is still one of the Pacific Northwest's most beloved waterfront destinations. And now a special offer that pairs stewardship with a steep discount is certain to win favor with environmentally conscious Seattleites.

ORCAS ISLAND -- It's hard to imagine today what Robert Moran's five-story mansion, painted a startling shade of maroon, must have looked like from the water in the early 1900s.
A major shipbuilder in Seattle, Moran apparently had some ship-bottom paint left over from one of his projects and didn't want to see it go to waste, according to Rosario Resort historian Christopher Peacock.
Now painted a much more conservative off-white, the Moran mansion is the centerpiece of a popular San Juan Islands vacation destination: Rosario Resort on Orcas Island.

ORCAS ISLAND We've received an autumn gift from the weather gods sunny, high 50s, almost no wind and friends Carolyn Moulton, Nick Stowe and I have wasted no time in tearing it open and getting down to some serious play. We're pedaling our mountain bikes to the highest point in the San Juan Islands, 2,409-foot Mount Constitution on Orcas Island.
